Hybrid Training

The hybrid athlete training programme I race on

I've trained exclusively hybrid for years. It took me to a sub-70 in my first Hyrox Pro race, to the ATHX World Championship, and through two Ironman 70.3s. This is the programming behind it.

What hybrid training actually is

Hybrid training, sometimes called concurrent training, means building muscular strength and aerobic endurance in the same training week, and improving at both. Squat heavy on Tuesday. Run long on Sunday. Get better at each.

The catch is real: the two adaptations compete for the same recovery, something sports science calls the interference effect. Done carelessly, endurance work blunts your strength gains and heavy lifting leaves your legs too cooked to run well. But the research is clear that interference is a programming problem, not a law of physics. With the right structure, strength and VO2max climb together. Every hybrid athlete you've seen do both well is proof.

Why most hybrid training plans stall

The classic failure: bolt a running plan onto a lifting plan and run both at full ambition. Six weeks later the lifts have stopped moving, the runs feel heavy, and sleep is getting worse. The usual conclusion, "hybrid doesn't work for me", is wrong. The plan was never hybrid. It was two rival programmes sharing one body.

  • No session separation. The hardest lifting and hardest running land back to back. The fix every good coach agrees on: keep your hardest strength day and hardest run apart, and when they must share a day, lift first.
  • Everything is a priority. If strength and cardio are both "the goal" every single week, neither gets enough stimulus to move. Proper hybrid blocks rotate the emphasis and hold the other quality at a maintenance dose.
  • No easy running. Most of the weekly mileage in a hybrid plan should be genuinely easy zone 2. That's what builds the aerobic base without eating the recovery your lifting needs. Lifters who start running almost always run everything too hard.
  • Nothing for durability. The volume of combined training is high. Without deliberate injury-prevention work like tendon loading, single-leg strength and tissue capacity, the plan works right up until it puts you on the physio's table.

The programme: strength, running and injury prevention in one plan

I've trained exclusively hybrid for years, and the Hybrid Athlete programme is that experience distilled: a smart blend of strength work, structured running and injury-prevention training, refined season after season on my own racing. Every week is built as one plan, with sessions sequenced so hard days are hard, easy days are actually easy, and the interference effect stays managed instead of ignored.

It's the same method I compete on. It took me to a sub-70-minute Hyrox in my first race in the Pro division, qualified me for the ATHX World Championship racing Pro, and carried me through two Ironman 70.3s, all while keeping the strength that endurance-only plans give away. I'm not selling a theory. I'm selling the exact structure I trust my own results to.

Programme or 1:1 coaching?

The Hybrid Athlete programme in the app is the structure ready to run: daily sessions on your phone, first 7 days free. 1:1 coaching is the bespoke version: your equipment, your schedule, your race calendar, with weekly check-ins and direct access to me. If you're between them, apply for the free intro call and I'll tell you straight which one fits, including when the answer is the cheaper one.

Is this you?

The lifter who gasses out

Strong on the platform, cooked by a flight of stairs. You don't have to trade your strength to build serious cardio.

The runner losing muscle

The miles are there but the strength never was, and it's starting to show up as niggles and injuries.

The future racer

Hyrox, ATHX, a triathlon. You want a start line one day, and a base of strength plus cardio is where every one of them begins.

Moe, strength and conditioning coach

Who is writing this?

I'm Moe: strength and conditioning coach, sports science degree, ten years coaching, currently on the floor at Third Space.

I race on my own programming. A sub-70 in my first Hyrox in the Pro division, an ATHX Pro World Championship qualification, and two Ironman 70.3 finishes. I'm not selling a theory. I'm selling the exact structure I trust my own results to.

Frequently asked questions

Can you really build strength and endurance at the same time?

Yes. The interference effect is manageable with proper programming, and the research backs it. Progress on each front is a little slower than specialising, but you end up capable of things a specialist can't do. My whole competitive record is built on concurrent training.

How many days a week is hybrid training?

The programme runs four to six sessions a week depending on the block. Four quality sessions, properly sequenced, beat six random ones, and the structure tells you exactly what each day is for.

Do I need a running background to start a hybrid programme?

No. Most people come to hybrid from the gym side. The running starts genuinely easy, at a conversational zone 2 pace, and builds from there. A big squat and no cardio is a normal starting point; I've coached plenty of both directions.

What makes this different from other hybrid athlete programmes?

Injury prevention is programmed in, not bolted on. The blend of strength, running and durability work is the result of years of me racing on this exact method. When something didn't survive contact with real competition, it got fixed. You're running the version that's already made the mistakes.

Is there a free trial?

Yes. The first 7 days of the Hybrid Athlete programme are free in the app, and you can cancel any time. There's also a free standalone training week if you want a taste by email first.
