Hyrox training, from someone who races Pro

My first ever Hyrox was in the Pro division and I finished under 70 minutes. That didn't come from Hyrox-specific hacks. It came from years of hybrid training done properly.

What the race actually demands

Hyrox is 8km of running broken into eight 1km segments, with a workout station between each: SkiErg, sled push, sled pull, burpee broad jumps, rowing, farmers carry, sandbag lunges, and 100 wall balls to finish. Add the transitions, known as the RoxZone, and you're moving for 60 to 100+ minutes with nowhere to hide.

On paper it's a fitness test. In practice it's one very specific skill: running on legs that have just been loaded, over and over. That's why finish times surprise people in both directions: fast runners bleed whole minutes on the sleds, and strong gym athletes watch their heart rate refuse to come down after station three. The race lives in the gap between those two athletes.

Where Hyrox races are actually lost

How I build a Hyrox training block

My preparation stands on the four pillars every serious Hyrox coach recognises, weighted by what your numbers say you need:

This is the exact preparation behind my own sub-70 finish in my first Pro-division Hyrox, built on the hybrid base I've been refining for years: strength, running and injury-prevention work in one programme, so you arrive at race week durable instead of patched together.

Training for Hyrox with me

1:1 coaching is the full version: your race date, your current engine and strength, a block built backwards from the start line with weekly check-ins. If you want the structure without the coach, the Hybrid Athlete programme in the app builds exactly the strength-plus-engine base that Hyrox is scored on, with the first 7 days free. A dedicated Hyrox programme is in the works, and programme members will hear about it first.

Is this you?

First-timer with a race booked

The date is real and "do more burpees" is not a plan. You want to arrive knowing exactly how to pace all sixteen segments.

Gym-fit, race-curious

Every station is fine on its own. The 8km of running wrapped around them is the problem to solve.

Chasing a time

You've raced once and the result annoyed you. The next block needs to be sharper: pacing, station splits, RoxZone and all.

Moe, strength and conditioning coach and hybrid athlete

Who's writing this?
I'm Moe: strength and conditioning coach, sports science degree, ten years coaching, currently on the floor at Third Space. I race on my own programming, with a sub-70 in my first Hyrox in the Pro division, an ATHX Pro World Championship qualification, and two Ironman 70.3 finishes. More about me →

From clients

“Moe built a programme around my touring schedule instead of forcing me to build my life around a programme. I'm stronger now than before I started touring.”

James Hype · DJ · 1:1 Coaching

“The Hyrox programme is genuinely built by someone who competes, not someone guessing. Every block had a purpose.”

Andrea Astarita · Creator · Train With Moe Programs

“Running a company leaves little time to think about training. Moe handles the programming, I just show up and follow the plan, it works!”

Frequently asked questions

How long do I need to train for a Hyrox?

With a training base, 8 to 12 weeks of specific preparation is a solid block. From scratch, give it longer. The aerobic base is the slowest quality to build and the most valuable one on race day.

Can I keep lifting while training for Hyrox?

Yes. Hyrox preparation is hybrid training's home turf. Strength work doesn't disappear, it gets organised around the block's priority. I kept mine through every race build, and the sleds thank you for it.

What's a good first Hyrox time?

Finishing times commonly range from around 90 minutes to over two hours for first-timers in open divisions, and it depends heavily on division and course congestion. A realistic target comes from your current run pace and station benchmarks, which is exactly what a proper block establishes in week one.

Do I need sleds and a SkiErg to train?

They help, and every station also has a workable substitute, so I programme around what your gym actually has. The one thing with no substitute is running.

Is there a Hyrox-specific app programme?

It's in the works. Right now: 1:1 coaching for a full race build, or the Hybrid Athlete programme for the strength-plus-engine base, with the first 7 days free.
