The bodybuilding programme you can still be running in ten years

Your joints have a budget, and most programmes spend it blindly. Cost-Based Training periodises it, so the barbell work stays heavy and never goes to failure while the machines take the punishment instead. Five lifting days and a restoration day, written by a qualified strength & conditioning coach and delivered a session at a time in the app.

Is this you?

You train hard and look the same

Effort without a structure stalls. Every session here has a target muscle, a rep number, an effort target and a reason, so the work finally shows in the mirror.

Your joints have started complaining

Barbells are never taken to failure. Machines are. That is the whole idea: push hardest where it costs your joints the least, so the heavy work stays crisp.

You want to still be lifting in ten years

This is built for the long run, not for one hard month. Volume and effort climb where it is safe to climb them, and back off on purpose.

Wherever your strength is today, the targets meet it

Effort-based targets scale every session to your current strength, so the same programme works on your first structured block and on your tenth. You are told how hard to push, and the load follows.

What's inside

Everything you need, nothing you don't

  • Nine progressive blocks across three repeating cycles, so the training moves forward instead of resetting every month or running out like a PDF that ends
  • Every exercise sorted into one of three joint-cost classes: barbell work loaded heavy and never taken past two reps in reserve, supported and single-leg work close to failure, machines to failure with drop sets allowed
  • One rep number on every exercise, not a range, with an effort ladder that tightens week by week so the load has to climb to keep pace
  • Five lifting days plus a restoration day of mobility, breathing and easy conditioning, in the same weekly shape every week so it is easy to keep
  • Recurring testing weeks at the end of every cycle: logged top sets, photos and bodyweight, so progress is measured rather than guessed at
  • A matched substitution for every movement, paired by movement pattern and joint cost rather than by whatever looks similar
  • Planned recovery weeks ending every block, plus a built-in rule for the weeks when life goes wrong
  • Delivered daily in the training app with video demos and coaching notes on every session
  • Written and updated by a qualified strength and conditioning coach who trains the same way
The architecture

How the training rolls

A cycle walks down the joint cost scale and up the volume scale at the same time. The heavy work is what makes you strong, the machine work is where the volume lands, and the light weeks are the design.

One training cycle of three blocks. The first block is Class 1, free and axial barbell work loaded heavy and never taken past two reps in reserve, with joint cost at its highest and volume at its lowest. The second is Class 2, supported and unilateral work taken close to failure, with joint cost coming down and volume climbing. The third is Class 3, fixed path and machine work taken to failure with drop sets allowed, with joint cost at its lowest and volume at its peak, nearly double the heavy block it followed. A recovery week ends every block. A testing week of logged top sets, photos and bodyweight ends the cycle, then the next cycle starts from the strength just built with the variants rotated.

The barbell work stays crisp because it never goes to failure, and the failure work is put where it costs your joints least. That is why a machine block feels so much bigger than the heavy block before it. The light weeks are not the programme going soft. They are where the growth arrives.

“Stronger On The Road”

★★★★★

Moe built a programme around my touring schedule instead of forcing me to build my life around a programme. I'm stronger now than before I started touring.

Questions, answered

Everything you need to know about Bodybuilding

Why does the volume change so much between blocks?

Because it is meant to. Chest volume in a machine block is close to double what it was in the heavy block before it. The loads you build in the heavy blocks get turned into muscle in the volume blocks: that is the design, not an accident. Volume drives growth, but with diminishing returns, so it climbs while it is still paying and backs off before it stops. Some weeks are deliberately easy. The recovery week at the end of a block is not time off, it is where the growth you just trained for actually arrives. A week that feels light is the programme working, not going soft.

What is Cost-Based Training?

It is the method behind my programmes, built from the research on training volume and effort and from the joint-by-joint approach used in strength and conditioning. Every exercise carries a joint cost. Barbell work is loaded heavy and never taken past two reps in reserve, supported and single-leg work goes close to failure, and machines go to failure. As the joint cost falls, the volume and the effort rise.

How many days a week is it?

Five lifting days, plus a restoration day of mobility, breathing and easy conditioning. Sunday is off, with optional easy cardio. The restoration day is not filler. It is the day that keeps the other five honest.

What level do I need to be?

If you can train with a barbell, dumbbells and machines, you can run this. Effort-based targets scale every session to your current strength, and every movement has a video demo and a matched substitution.

Does the programming ever run out?

No. It is continuous. When a cycle ends the next one starts from the strength you just built, the exercise variants rotate so it never goes stale, and nothing resets to zero.

What if I miss a rep?

Missing by a rep is not failing. Every exercise has one rep number rather than a range, so there is no buffer built in to hide in. If the target is eight and you get seven, log it and carry on. The thing that actually stalls progress is dropping the weight to guarantee the number.

What equipment do I need?

A standard gym: barbell, dumbbells, cables and the usual machines. The machines matter here, because they are where the failure work belongs. A matched substitution is shown whenever a piece of kit is missing.

Is this for competition prep?

No. This is for building muscle and looking better for the long run, not for stepping on stage. If you want prep-level coaching built around you, apply for 1:1 coaching.

What if I miss a day?

Nothing breaks. Pick up where you left off and the block simply shifts. Consistency over weeks matters far more than any single session.

How do I access my workouts?

Through the training app on your phone. Sign up, log in and today's session is on the home screen with sets, reps and video demos.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes, in a couple of taps from the app, including during the 7-day free trial. No calls, no lock-in.

What happens after the 7-day free trial?

Your subscription starts and the programme carries straight on from wherever you are in the block. Cancel before day 7 and you pay nothing.

Can I switch to 1:1 coaching later?

Yes, and programme members get priority when coaching spots open. Your training history comes with you.

Is my payment secure?

Payments are handled by our payment providers. Card details never touch our servers.

Still unsure? Apply for 1:1 coaching and we can talk through what fits.
